Meet the Teacher!

-----------Stone Scholastic Academy-------
Looking Forward to a Great New Year!

Dear Parents,

Hello! My name is Jennifer Garcia (McFarland) and I will be your child’s 6th or 7th grade Social Studies teacher.  I will be spending a great deal of time with your child in the upcoming school year.  Because of this, we’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a few things about myself-both personally and professionally.

I was born and raised in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago.  I’m a huge Chicago sports fan but the Cubs hold a special place in my heart.  In my free time I enjoy exploring new places with my family.  My 8-yr-old daughter Scarlett keeps me super busy - who knew I could master the art of slime making?! She’s really excited to start 3rd grade this year.   We also have a dog named Murphy who keeps us on our toes at all times.  This will be my 13th year at Stone Scholastic Academy and 23rd year teaching in Chicago Public Schools.  I’m honored to be a part of the Stone family and look forward to a great year!

As your child’s 6th grade Social Studies teacher we will begin the year with discussions around history and our culture. We will then move into our main focus of study - ancient civilizations.  We begin with understanding early humans and the Stone Age.  We then will move on with Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece as well as a well-designed Civil Rights Movement halfway through the year.   Additionally, one day a week we will discuss current events.

As your child’s 7th grade Social Studies teacher we will begin the year studying early US history through the mid 19th century.  We then move on to origins of culture and identity by asking questions similar to “whose story is NOT being told?”  Our next unit is titled resistance, change, and liberation.  Students will explore what motivates people to act. For the remainder of the year students will study US geography and current events.  We will study and explore these topics through the lens of diverse perspectives with different sources of information.

As a parent, you are the most important person in your child’s life, and we need to work together for your child’s benefit.  We will need your guidance with supporting homework assignments, encouraging academic goals, and maintaining responsible behavior.  We will keep you informed about your child’s progress using the Chicago Public Schools Parent Portal, email and phone.  With school and home working together, we know your child can have a successful year!

Please feel free to email men  anytime with questions or concerns at [email protected]

Sincerely,

Ms. Jennifer Garcia
